The authors address the neglected field of appropriate information and communication technologies for small companies in the manufacturing industry, through the development of an architecture that integrates various open and low-cost technologies. The SmartFactory architecture reported here consists of open source software, networking and computing equipment that complies with open standards and web-based interfaces made possible by open standards
