In a recent investigation it was found that areas of isolated rutting was identified at certain constant distances away from a major bridge on a highway in South Africa. On investigation, it was found that the bridge deck joint was protruding above the adjacent road and bridge surface by approximately 10 millimeter. Closer inspection showed that definite moving variable loads were generated by the heavy vehicles that passed over the joint.
