Cape Town, South Africa, June 2008, pp 1http://hdl.handle.net/10204/3257ElectrochemSA Conference. Cape Town, South Africa, June 2008Ethanol is an alternative choice fuel for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC), due to its nontoxicity and its availability from biomass resources advocates its use in direct ethanol fuel cells. In this study PtSn/C and PtIr/C electrocatalyst were synthesized by reduction of the metal precursors using a chemical deposition method. These electrocatalysts were prepared by addition of the reducing agent on a high surface Vulcan XC-72(ChemiPhos) at 80°C. The electrocatalysts were characterised using CV, TEM, XRD and XPS. The stability of ethanol oxidation on these electrocatalysts was investigated by chronoamperometry. Comparison of ethanol oxidation on PtSn/C and PtIr/C. PtSn/C micrograph shows a superior electrocatalytic activity to ethanol oxidation than PtIr/C. The coulometric with other characterisation results will be presented in this posterenPEMFCPolymer electrolyte membrane fuel cellsEthanolBinary catalystsEthanol electrooxidationSynthesis and characterisation of binary electrocatalysts for electrochemical oxidation of ethanol in PEMFCConference PresentationMasombuka, T., Modibedi, R.
