The presentation is arranged in terms of the various marine research organisations in the country, to indicate the distribution of effort. The oceanographic activities for each organization, is separated according to the focus areas of each institution. To achieve some consistency with the previous report to IAPSO, this account also contains two brief sections on South African vessels used in oceanographic research and aspects of marine data management, respectively As with previous reports an attempt is made to represent as comprehensive a bibliography as possible , but not only including references that are readily accessible to readers. Research reported only in the form of theses, intra-organizational documents and contract reports, or with ‘submitted’ status, has been omitted.
