Report 26 of the Estuaries of the Cape, Part 2: Synopses of available information on individual systems series, edited by Heydorn, AEF and Grindley, JR. Stellenbosch: CSIR. (CSIR research report 425)0 7988 2860 9http://hdl.handle.net/10204/3485Estuaries of the CapeIn this report available historical information on Olifants estuary and abiotic and biotic characteristics found in the estuary are presented. The Olifants River system was explored early in the colonization of the Cape by European settlers. This estuary is in an almost pristine state and human activity in the area has had little impact on it. In fact the sole activity that has a direct effect is fishing and even this is on a small scale. At present, activities in the catchment probably have a greater effect on the estuary than those in its immediate environs.enEstuaries - South African estuariesEstuarine systemCape estuariesCoastal researchOlifants estuaryOlifants RiverAbiotic characteristicsBiotic characteristicsRiver catchmentFaunaFloraCouncil for Scientific and Industrial ResearchCSIRNational Research Institute for OceanologyNRIOArchaelogyOlifants (CW10)ReportMorant, P.
