Stellenbosch, South Africa, 30 November - 5 December 2008Synthesis and characterization of anion-exchange membranes (AEMs) using polysulfones is described. The modification process of polysulfones involves two steps: Firstly, by introducing chloromethyl groups followed by quaternization reaction with trimethylamine in the presence of 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone. All polymeric structures were confirmed by 1H-NMR and FT-IR respectively unless stated otherwise. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) technique was used to determine the membrane is thermal stability and its fraction of volatile components by monitoring the weight change that occurred as the compound was heated. Ionic conductivities and methanol permeability will also be highlightedenPolysulfoneQuartenizationAEMAnion exchange membranesChemical modificationChemical modification and characterization of quaternized polysulfones.Conference PresentationNonjola, P.
