Report 9 of the Estuaries of the Cape, Part 2: Synopses of available information on individual systems series, edited by Heydorn, AEF and Grindley, JR. Stellenbosch: CSIR. (CSIR Research Report 408)0 7988 2179 5http://hdl.handle.net/10204/3471Estuaries of the CapeThis report provides historical overview on river catchment, ecology, biotic and abiotic characteristics and available information on the Uilkraals estuary. The Uilkraals has a relatively small Table Mountain Sandstone dominated catchment of 313 km2 which receives most of its annual rainfall in the winter months. The river therefore flows strongly in winter with run-off declining in summer. The ecological viability of the estuary depends primarily on tidal flushing. The Uilkraals is biologically productive because of its extensive low-lying floodplain and good tidal water exchange. However, severe problems have been experienced near the mouth which can be attributed to the factors provided in the report.enEstuaries - South African estuariesMarine ecologyCape estuariesEstuarineCoastal researchUilkraals RiverUilkraals estuaryAbiotic characteristicsBiotic characteristicsFaunaFloraRiver catchmentCSIRCouncil for Scientific and Industrial ResearchNRIONational Research Institute for OceanologyTable Mountain sandstoneUilkraals (CSW17)ReportEstuarine and Coastal Research Unit, E.
