Item Atlas of industrial wastewater reuse potential in South Africa(CSIR, 2021-03) Steyn, Maronel; Walters, Chavon R; Mathye, Salamina M; Ndlela, Luyanda L; Thwala, Melusi; Banoo, Ismail; Tancu, Yolanda; Genthe, BettinaThe South African economy largely depends on mining and other large industries. According to the National Water Resources Strategy 2 (DWA, 2013a), the mining sector, with an estimated demand of about 5% of the country’s available water, is a significant user of water. Coal and Platinum mining in particular is currently expanding into new areas with a projected increase in water demand. Many of these mines are located in water resource scarce catchments (e.g. the Lephalale and Steelpoort areas in the Limpopo province) where the availability of water can become a significant business risk. Water availability should however not be a limiting factor to growth in the country. Water resources management and development should prioritise availability of water to industry. Similarly, implementation of water conservation and water demand management (WC/WDM) measures within the mining sector is required in order to minimise this risk (DWS, 2016).Item Consultation paper on concurrence with the ministerial determination on the procurement of 2 500 MW generation capacity from nuclear(CSIR, 2021-02) Wright, Jarrad G; Calitz, Joanne RAccording to section 34 of the Electricity Regulation Act, 2006 (Act No 4 of 2006 NERSA is required to appropriately apply its regulatory reviews and make decisions prior to the conclusion of the determination process by the Minister of the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (NERSA received Section 34 determinations from Minister of DMRE for the procurement of 2 500 MW of new generation capacity from nuclear technology. This is in line with Decision 8 of the Integrated Resource Plan for Electricity published as GN 1360 of 18 10 2019 in Government Gazette No 42784 (IRP 2019). The determined 2 500 MW nuclear capacity is assumed to reach commercial operation by 2030 in the IRP 2019. The capacity is to provide clean base supply capacity in response to the approximately 11 0 GW of coal capacity being decommissioned by 2030 as well as to maintain supply demand balance and improve energy security. This submission forms the CSIR’s written comments on the consultation paper published by NERSA in November 2020 on the prospective concurrence with the ministerial determination on the procurement of 2 500 MW generation capacity from nuclear technology.Item Draft position paper on CSI and SASDI(2010-08) Cooper, Antony K; Eloff, C; Schmitz, PMUThis position paper was drafted shortly after the first meeting of the Committee for Spatial Information (CSI), because it was obvious from that first meeting that most of the members of the CSI had little knowledge of spatial data infrastructures (SDIs). This position paper aimed at making the CSI more effective at helping government deliver services.Item Integrated ocean carbon research: A summary of ocean carbon research, and vision of coordinated ocean carbon research and observations for the next decade(France: Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (UNESCO-IOC), 2021) Aricò, S; Arrieta, JM; Bakker, DC; Boyd, PW; Cotrim da Cunha, L; Chai, F; Dai, M; Gruber, N; Isensee, K; Monteiro, Pedro MOne of the major expectations from the Decade is a predicted ocean that relies on the integration of comprehensive modeling and sustainable ocean observing systems. Specific to climate change and ocean carbon, the Implementation Plan contains dedicated Ocean Decade Challenge 5: Enhance understanding of the ocean-climate nexus and use this understanding to generate solutions to mitigate, adapt and build resilience to the effects of climate change, and to improve services including improved predictions and forecasts for weather, climate, and the ocean. The IOC-R addresses key issues in ocean carbon research through a combined strategy of research and observational goals. The research will be framed by four key questions that were formulated at the inaugural Expert Workshop on Integrated Ocean Carbon Research at IOC-UNESCO (UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) headquarters in Paris, France on October 28-30, 2019.Item IPCC, 2021: Summary for Policymakers. In: Climate Change 2021: The Physical Science Basis. Contribution of Working Group I to the Sixth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change(Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, United Kingdom and New York, NY, USA, 2021-01) Masson-Delmotte, VP; Zhai, P; Pirani, SL; Connors, C; Péan, S; Berger, N; Caud, Y; Chen, L; Goldfarb, MI; Scheel Monteiro, Pedro MThis Summary for Policymakers (SPM) presents key findings of the Working Group I (WGI) contribution to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report (AR6)1 on the physical science basis of climate change. The report builds upon the 2013 Working Group I contribution to the IPCC¿s Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) and the 2018¿2019 IPCC Special Reports of the AR6 cycle and incorporates subsequent new evidence from climate science. This SPM provides a high-level summary of the understanding of the current state of the climate, including how it is changing and the role of human influence, the state of knowledge about possible climate futures, climate information relevant to regions and sectors, and limiting human-induced climate change.Item Overview of the Duiwenhoks Estuary(2021-05) Van Niekerk, LaraThe presentation provides an overview of the Duiwenhoks Estuary.Item Spatial data infrastructures (SDIs) and observatories for spatial analysis(2013-11) Cooper, Antony KThis policy note highlights some issues concerning spatial data infrastructures (SDIs) and similar systems in South Africa, which aim at providing integrated, harmonized, quality geospatial data sets readily, quickly and affordably to users. SDIs are particularly useful for supporting evidence-based planning. Please note that there is a variety of terms used for geospatial data, but they are all essentially synonyms: spatial, spatially-referenced, geographical, geographically-referenced, geo-referenced or geo, data or information. The term geospatial shall be used here.Item Training and capacity building on the Coastal Climate Change Tool(2023-10) Lück-Vogel, MelanieThis presentation was the baseline for about 20 training workshops to government official on coastal climate change, coastal flood and erosion risk lines and coastal management lines. These workshops were conducted between 2020 and 2023 on behalf of DFFE with funding from the German GIZ and the Benguela Current Convention.
