Rockbreaking is the most basic of the operations required in mining and over the years has been subject of extensive research and development. This document is a summary of the work carried out by the Chamber of Mines Research Organization supplemented by studies of work carried out by others, both in South Africa and overseas. The document has been prepared as part of a process of critically reviewing what progress has been made in solving the stoping problem and forms the basis for determining the direction for future research and development.
