Dense medium cyclones have been used for many years in a number of countries to beneficiate fine coal. The use of cyclones in this application is, however, not widespread and at present, the process is in use only in South Africa and China. The paper provides a brief overview of past and current application of dense medium cyclones in the processing of fine coal and reviews some of the important considerations for the successful application of the technique.
