Abstract

In 1972 Department of water affairs and the bureau of standards expressed concern at eutrophication as a water quality problem and requested the water research commission(WRC) to initiate research on its causes. consequences and controls. In 1973 the National Institute for Water Research (NIWR) entered into contract with the WRC to carry out this research. The research programme aimed at obtaining information on the prevention of eutrophication of systems which were not enriched and rehabilitation of the systems where eutrophication problem were being experienced. A document Guideline for the control of eutrophication in South Africa(Walmsley and Butty, 1980) resulted from this work.
