dc.description.abstract |
This presentation investigates the presence of evidence of increasing quantities of nanowaste streams into the environment, as well as the trends for nanowastes generation. The growth of nano-related patents is discussed, and the growth in global nano R&D and venture capital also examined. A qualitative risk assessment of nanowastes is provided, and a probable environmental nanomaterials flows in SA scenario is supplied. This is followed up with a case study in the city of Johannesburg. In summary it is stated that waste-related issues have begun to challenge present waste management systems, and that there is a need for more focussed research to quantify the risks, as well as the development of mechanisms to deal with them adequately. |
