dc.description 4th International Conference on Nanotechnology - Occupational and Environmental Health (NANOEH09), Paasitorni, Helsinki, Finland, 26- 29 August, 2009 en
dc.description.abstract This presentation investigates the presence of evidence of increasing quantities of nanowaste streams into the environment, as well as the trends for nanowastes generation. The growth of nano-related patents is discussed, and the growth in global nano R&D and venture capital also examined. A qualitative risk assessment of nanowastes is provided, and a probable environmental nanomaterials flows in SA scenario is supplied. This is followed up with a case study in the city of Johannesburg. In summary it is stated that waste-related issues have begun to challenge present waste management systems, and that there is a need for more focussed research to quantify the risks, as well as the development of mechanisms to deal with them adequately. en
