The hybrid mini-grid systems at the Hluleka Nature Reserve and Lucingweni on the Wild coast of the Eastern Cape Province of South African were implemented to provide the experience necessary to develop a nation wide rollout plan for hybrid mini-grid energy systems. These two mini-grids made use of local solar and wind resources to generate electricity. This paper describes the technical lessons that the CSIR learnt in its experiences with the design and implementation of these hybrid mini-grids. The paper will also discuss the research into results of a Geographic Information System (GIS) that was developed to generate, analyse and present combinations of supply-side, demand-side and financing data so that the locations and characteristics of renewable energy systems could be identified The lessons learned from the hybrid mini-grids and additional research on energy generation technologies identified a gap for research into a concept known as Distributed Generation (DG). Recommendations on DG for South Africa based on renewable energy resources to compliment bulk generation of electricity will be presented. A brief description will also be provided of HomerGIS, a rural electrification planning tool that is being developed by the CSIR, Eskom and the DoE. |
