The neglected field of appropriate information and communications technologies for small companies in the manufacturing industry is addressed through the development of an architecture that integrates various open and low-cost technologies. The SmartFactory architecture consists of open source software, networking and equipment that comply with open standards, and web-based interfaces made possible by open standards
