The European Union's (EU) Framework Programmes (FPs), administered by the European Commission, are Europe's major instrument in the field of science, research and innovation and by FP6 (2002-2006), represented about 4 to 5% of the total spending in this area by the EU member states. South Africa has been able to join projects since FP4 (1994- 1998) and has achieved considerable success since then. The focus in this presentation is on the CSIR's role in FP6; participation in the future FP7 (2007- 2013) is also discussed
