Abstract: In this paper the manufacturing environment with regards to technology and market is discussed. Both the South African and global view are given, together with technology management strategies. Value added products are described and determined as an important factor for competitive manufacturing industry. Manufacturing systems that support high value added products such as FMS and RMS are discussed. Factors and technologies that enable FMS and RMS are also presented. These technologies are important in the achievement of factories of the future
