There is very little information on small-scale sawmilling (SSM) in South Africa, particularly on the size of the timber resource, the number of people employed by the sub-sector, and its profitability. In addition, there is no information on the role of SSM in household and community livelihoods in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. It has therefore not been possible to evaluate whether SSM is a suitable entry point for support to livelihood enhancement and / or pro-poor enterprise development
