This document provides a description of the past, current and planned South African biological research activities in the sub-Antarctic and Antarctic regions. Future activities will fall under one of the five components of the research programme, viz palaeo-ecological and biographical studies, ecosystem studies, aetiological studies, studies on alien biota and monitoring studies. These components accommodate national and international needs within the constraints of the available manpower, finances and logistical support
