The report presents the proceedings of a three-day workshop at Midmar Dam designed to establish a consensus view of river conservation and to provide professional conservationists, managers and planners with a set of guidelines. These indicate what is known about the ecology of South African rivers, what options are available for monitoring and exploitation of rivers and what research priorities should be implemented to increase our understanding of ecology.
