dc.description.abstract The debate over the degradation of coastal waters by sewage, oil and industrial wastes, continues. To provide a wide-ranging but concise examination of this topic, the Foundation for Research Development of the CSIR organized a one-day public technical symposium, attended by 250 people, to examine the nature, degree and control of marine pollution in South African coastal waters in the Muizenberg Pavilion on 8 September 1988. This report contains the presentations of invited speakers selected from a wide spectrum of scientific, technical and administrative backgrounds. Speakers emphasized current knowledge, perception and control measures to offer a condensed but broad perspective of the major issues and of advances made in recent years. en
