dc.description.abstract South African research in the Southern Ocean has already produced some important and illuminating results. Most of these efforts, however, were of an individual and uncoordinated nature. Due to increasing interest in the ocean- in South Africa and elsewhere- and to ensure the most efficient possible utilization of limited manpower and facilities, a national programme had to be formulated to achieve the required coordination and cooperation. Such a programme is presented in this report, compiled in cooperation with all interested parties. It briefly outlines the motivation for South African research in the Southern Ocean and indicated the research objectives of each marine discipline within a coordinated programme. The report also contains a more elaborate list with details and descriptions of each proposed research project. en
