This report contains an outline of the research proposed for the National Geoscience Programme which has as its main theme the study of the processes of ore formation in the earth's crust. Research will focus on the development of conceptual models for ore genesis which could be applied in the search for new ore concentrations. In the first part of the report the existing knowledge in the field of ore genesis in the different geological environments (igneous, metaraorphic and sedimentary) is analyzed and deficiencies are highlighted. The available geological maps are reviewed and maps still required are identified. The research and exploration techniques currently being applied in South Africa are outlined and areas which require more research and development are discussed. It is recognized that to address all the identified problems at the same time would be impossible in the light of the manpower and finance available. In order, therefore, to ensure an integrated coordinated research effort, seven sub-programmes embodying some of the major problems, were selected. The second part of the report summarizes the existing knowledge in these sub-programmes and outlines their aims. Priority areas for research are noted and briefly described. A guide for participants in the programme, including a code of conduct and a format for project proposals and for the reporting of research. |
