dc.description.abstract Heavy vehicle overloading continues to be a major problem in South Africa notwithstanding efforts at more effective overload control by the authorities. This paper describes a pilot project, funded by the Department of Trade and Industry and Forestry South Africa, in which the aim of the initiative was to promote professionalism in heavy vehicle transport as well as transport efficiency within the legal framework through effective management and training. Although the main focus of the project was the management of vehicle loading, certain aspects of vehicle safety, vehicle maintenance and driver wellness and training are also being addressed. en
