Abstract: The brief of this research was to identify the hazards associated with underground track bound transportation on Gold and Platinum mines, describe the learning that is necessary to recognize these hazards and then to determine the most suitable techniques for transferring this learning to individuals. Prior to the commencement of the research the project team had expected that the final outcomes might resemble a checklist of learning techniques and learning outcomes. This was not to be. Instead a complex interaction of organizational and individual factors emerged. The research found that measuring and understanding this interaction is key to designing learning programmes that will significantly impact on safety performance.
