This research report summarizes an extensive literature survey on roofbolt support design methods used worldwide, and presents the findings of extensive underground roof monitoring conducted in 29 sites at five collieries. An analysis of fall of ground fatalities covering the period 1985 to 1995 is also presented. The results showed that fall of ground accidents still remain the largest single cause of fatalities and injuries in South African collieries. The risk of individuals going underground has not shown a significant increase or decrease over the 27 year period (1970-1996).
