A number of profiles of raw wool staples are illustrated, and also the profile of raw mohair staple. It is shown that testing of the strength of raw wool stapled at a short gauge, in addition to the maxim practical gauge, (namely where the staple is clamped 18mm from both root and tip), can be potentially useful in explaining variations in percentage noil during subsequent combing.
