In this report an account is given of a new technique developed at the Fuel Research Institute whereby the methane evolved from a coal sample is automatically measured and analyzed. The method utilizes a gas detector of high sensitivity to monitor the methane content of a carrier gas that is used to sweep methane from a mill while the sample is being crushed.
