Although the union of South Africa possesses reasonably large reserves of coal of various qualities, the reserves of coking coal are comparatively small and are being exhausted at an alarming rate. The proven reserves of coking coal are estimated at about 260 million tons, of which 160 million tons are in Natal and 100 million tons in the Transvaal.
