Bio-based products have been used in the packaging sector and now there has been a considerable growth in the use of biocomposites in transport (automotive and aerospace) and electronics sector. However, it is imperative that components used for these applications meet with strict flammability requirements. This chapter deals with an overview of the reasons for the emergence of biocomposites in advanced industrial sectors. The techniques for flammability measurements and the effects of different types of flame retardants on the properties of the bio-based systems are discussed. Finally case studies dealing with the use of green flame retardants in biopolymer-based systems are also presented.
