Abstract: Indigenous knowledge related to Lanhouin processing, commercialization, and consumption was investigated through a survey in the Mono District in the south of Benin using a questionnaire. The questionnaire focused on the socio-cultural profile of actors, the raw materials used for the processing, the technologies used, the quality attributes, the forms of consumption, and the storage of the product. The data collected were analysed by means of descriptive statistics and correspondence analysis. The results showed that Lanhouin is generally processed in informal small-scale plants. A large number of women are engaged in the production and the trade of Lanhouin and this constitutes the main source of income for most of them. Three variants of technologies were used to produce Lanhouin, but all apparently concluded in the same end product. The appreciation of the quality of Lanhouin by the actors is mainly based on sensory attributes such as the colour, texture, aroma, consistency of flesh, and the general appearance of the product. In Benin, Lanhouin serves various markets: domestic markets and sub-regional markets that contribute to an expanding market. As regards the forms of consumption, Lanhouin is used as a taste and flavour enhancing condiment in some main dishes such as vegetable, slimy vegetable, and tomato sauces.

Authors: Mentz, J; Kotzé, P; Van der Merwe, A
Abstract: The term enterprise architecture has been in use for almost thirty years if the seminal paper (published in 1987) by Zachman is taken as its starting point. As a scientific area of study this time span is relatively short but for the practitioner it could be a time long enough for the original interest to wane. Gartner’s research reflects that the practitioner interest is growing and the development of enterprise architecture frameworks, such as the 2009 update of The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF), shows the active development of enterprise architecture frameworks. In this paper two enterprise architecture definitions that is representative of the practitioner and the researcher position are compared to the definitions of the Zachman Framework and TOGAF to determine the agreement between practitioner and researcher thought on enterprise architecture. The comparison is conducted via an interpretation method that is based on hermeneutic phenomenology. The results indicate a correspondence between practitioner and researcher views that opens the way for co-operative research.

Authors: Muswema, AP
Abstract: Small business, including small, medium and micro-sized enterprises (SMMEs), is seen as the corner stone of economic development in South Africa, with reported contributions of up to 42% to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The South African Government recognises the contributions made by this sector, and amongst other initiatives has gazetted the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) Act (53/2003): Codes of Good Practice, to assist in strengthening and supporting this emerging sector. This paper discusses a successful case study where an emerging SMME or developing organisation (DevO) in the waste management sector received support in the form of mentorship and training from an established organisation (EstO) over a three year period. Lessons learnt from two other failed attempts at developing similar relationships with other DevO are also discussed. These lessons include the selection of beneficiaries for this type of program and how factors such as physical proximity or location of the stakeholders, frequency of interaction, demonstrated eagerness or enthusiasm for the program, the setting of milestones and the maturity of the DevO influenced the success or failure of the relationship. The paper also talks to the challenge of showing progress from one assessment period to another, the importance of achieving buy-in from stakeholders, the administrative burden and the expectations held by stakeholders.
